We sleep in there, we exchange love gestures, we play and we relax: the bed is our constant companion, the place where we can shelter and not think about our problems. Let's not forget that the bed is a fundamental part of the decor of the room and therefore it should be chosen with extreme care. This furniture has evolved over thousands of years, undergoing constant changes and adapting to the needs of the moment. The first evidence of the existence of a couch that was similar to modern beds can be traced back to ancient Egypt. The bed in question had a rectangular structure and it was made of wood. The precision of the details is still surprising. The headboard and supports were carved and decorated with animal heads and effigies of Egyptian gods that were believed to have a propitiatory function. In particular, among the most recurrent figures there was the dog. It was a sacred animal for ancient Egyptians who believed it was a kind of divine being designed to protect sleep and keep nightmares away. Some Egyptian bed were even made in the shape of animal statues, adapted to provide a place to sleep. Maybe they weren’t extremely comfortable, but certainly the visual impact was great. Of course we are talking about beds belonging to the high castes of society and to pharaohs, since slaves and people slept on the floor or on piles of straw and hay. Over the centuries, here comes the Greek era, which saw the birth of the triclinium. The peculiarity of this bed (still quite primitive in form and shape), was to be used not only for sleeping but also for enjoying delicious banquet in the company of the most highly placed personalities of the city, with whom they carried out important business and economic exchanges while eating. Not only: if needed, the triclinium could even serve as a coffin, where the bodies of the dead were accommodate while other people were praying for them. Also in this case, the most widely used building material was wood, which was used to make solid and resistant single beds of the Greeks. The top and bottom of the bed were made of bronze instead, adorned with decorations in the shape of leaves, fruits and geometric shapes. This type of bed, being aesthetically pleasing, functional and versatile at the same time, lasted over thousands of years, so much so that it was resumed in ancient Rome and Etruria. Compared to the previous model, however, the bed of the new historical epoch was slightly lower and elongated, taking the name of fulcrum. The reason is not hard to imagine: these beds were the center of the daily and night life of powerful people, transforming itself according to the needs of the moment and becoming a bed, small desk, coffin or love nest. Ornaments, engravings and figures are forgotten in the Middle Ages, a time dedicated to sobriety and to the exclusion of any excess, even as regards furniture for the house and art in general. The typical medieval beds were extremely simple, quite high and without ornaments, except in rare cases. To reach the bed, it was customary to place a stool next to it, which facilitated the action of getting in and off these high bed. Even though it was not very nice to look at. A curiosity: medieval single beds were very short, given that the population of the time rarely reached 170 cm. Unfortunately, mice loved to take refuge in warm places like beds and the medieval did not know many valid remedies to get rid of them. The only option was to sleep as upright as possible, in order to prevent mice to reach the face. Double beds and single beds in the shape and structure we know start to appear in the late Fifteenth century. Some models had an underlying compartment to contain the trousseau and household linen. The Fifteenth-century bed was definitely more comfortable, versatile and large both in length and width. It had a structure with three sides that ended at the bottom with a large chest, where the linen was stored, or other large items not frequently used. The footboard made its appearance and the headboard as well. These two parts of the bed had different styles depending on the craftsman who made them. In the Sixteenth century, the bed was a symbol of the social status of its owner. The most it was large, opulent and decorated, the greater the prestige of those who had the good fortune to own it and enjoy it. The only flaw were mice, that even in this era plagued the people, no matter if they were rich or poor. Therefore the normal sleeping position was as upright as possible. The sixteenth century was a period marked by the glitz, also as regards parties, banquets and celebrations at the court of the ruler. So much food and wine were rather difficult to digest and, to promote sleep, they used to put as many pillows as possible so as not to sleep in a horizontal position. In the Sixteenth century the famous canopy bed made its appearance, with its four supports at the corners of the base that supported a tarp or a heavy cloth depending on the occasion. The drape hanging from above the bed allowed to have some privacy, given the intense life at court, as well as protection against insects. The cloth had therefore also the function of a mosquito net. The canopy bed is transformed during the Seventeenth century: from mere alcove to real piece of furniture able to enhance the surrounding environment. Further changes were carried out in the next century, where the bed loses the sumptuous decorations of the Sixteenth century returning to emulate the medieval models. The style is basic but certainly not less elegant. The bed assumes the typical dome shape, enhanced by beautiful dark wood, usually mahogany. The Nineteenth century is known for its double and single beds in iron and brass. Not by chance, iron is the main material of Art Nouveau furnishings. It is only now that the bed is conceived as a real piece of furniture that completes the decoration of the house and enhances its artistic value. In this period it is important the introduction of the metal bedstead, which will give more support to the bed and allow the use of less rigid mattresses. The bedstead also had the important function of facilitating the cleaning and improving the hygiene of the bed itself. Since then, single and double beds have evolved as regards both aesthetics and functionality, particularly with regard to health and comfort. Technology and design are continuing their constant improvement. In the Twentieth century, we had the wide spread of modern and futuristic beds: some examples are the Capsule Home by Archigram, the Cushicle or even the Suitaloon. The goal of these designers was to design beds that would reflect more the new modernity and their values rather than to meet the need for comfort of those who had to use the bed itself. The bed line is sober, pure, geometric, without excesses. Decorations and frills disappear completely, leaving space to the essential. This is also true as regards materials and colours, which become cold and icy, without any nuance and even better if with lacquered finishes. Luckily, nowadays comfort and physical well-being are very important, especially for a piece of furniture such as the bed, where we spend several hours of the day and night and that should ensure an optimal rest, making us wake up refreshed and without pain due to a wrong posture or poor-quality materials. What types of single and double beds are popular and how to make the best choice? Much attention should be paid to the selection of materials. Typically, beds are made with a wooden base or made of rigid tissue. Both are worthy of interest, because they ensure a long life and unparalleled robustness and hygiene. Fabric beds are excellent, more versatile and suitable for modern life: starting from the classic leather up to the coating materials created using the latest technology, which are easy to wash and do not stain. Another important advantage of fabric beds is the fact that they allow us to match the fabric with bed linen creating a pleasant and harmonious effect, from the simple sheet to the warm winter quilt. The beds made of hyper-modern materials are also very nice, maybe enriched with contrasting inserts. Their implementation is complex and includes hand-finished by expert craftsmen. As it is well known, the bed should be comfortable not only to sleep but also to perform various tasks, such as reading or watching TV in full relaxation. Those who want to use the bed as a versatile piece of furniture should opt for models that provide a comfortable headboard, padded and maybe that also acts as a cushion or headrest. Footboard yes or footboard no? Obviously, it depends on the case. If the room is not particularly large, it would be better to opt for single or double beds that without footboard, in order to enlarge the space. To make the most of the space available, especially in the kids’ bedroom, you can purchase single beds that turn into sofas, or even with the classic bridge structure. Another alternative are the single beds provided with side removable drawers that, in addition to taking up less space and containing objects and linen, allow an easier cleaning. The headboard and footboard are lightweight and yet hyper-resistant, embellished with geometric lines that recall the style of the bed. The bedstead is raised, so as to allow an easy cleaning. Oeuf Be Good reflects the modern style of the latest single beds, enriching them with inlays and retro details that give that extra touch that does not go unnoticed. Lines and colours, however, are hyper modern. The Noctis collections that combine historic elements with design accents are exceptionally beautiful and charming: the headboards and footboards recall the ancient royal canopies, however added to futuristic and cutting-edge frames. The single beds by Noctis are available in different sizes and in a wide range of colours, playing on a pleasing colour contrast: here, the natural and white structure clashes nicely with the headboard and footboard in shades of acid green, cyclamen, orange or other strong tints. The result is an unparalleled elegance. Such single beds are capable of enhancing and giving character to a whole room by themselves. And we must not forget the comfort ensured by the softness of the selected materials and thick coatings. Minimalist but not banal, the single beds by Flexa have a pure and unpretentious line that recalls the ‘60s. Of course there are nods to modernity and elements of interest, represented by the contrasting color of the legs and the headboards, which are tinged with romantic pastel shades. A bed like this fits perfectly in any home, from the most classic to ultra-modern ones, without being excessive or out of tune. The small size of single beds allows you to make the most of the space and to have the ability not to give up a precious design piece despite not having a large space available. Flexa also thinks about those families who have more than one child or that do not live in a very large house. In these cases, the bunk beds and bridge beds are perfect, which become an integral part of the decor. In fact, you can arrange other useful furniture under the bedstead, such as a desk and a chair to create a practical study area. The bed is easy to reach thanks to a comfortable built-in ladder.
